Public discussion has begun in Polotsk on renaming one of the streets in honor of the Battle of Grunwald
March 30, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. Public discussion on renaming one of the streets in Polotsk in honor of the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald has begun in this ancient city, Deputy Chairman of the Polotsk City Executive Committee Nikolai Ilyushenok told a BELTA correspondent.
Questionnaires, surveys of residents and organizations, discussions in the city newspaper - this is far from a complete list of ways in which city authorities are studying the opinion of citizens.
The initiative to name one of the streets in Polotsk Grunwaldskaya belongs to the Polotsk community. Its members believe that Polotsk should celebrate the 600th anniversary of the famous battle, where the united forces of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland defeated the army of the Teutonic Order. Belarusian banners made a huge contribution to the victory. The Polotsk regiment was one of the largest and best-armed among them. The courage of the Polotsk residents did not go unnoticed by contemporaries or historians, according to a letter signed on behalf of the community by a member of the Union of Writers of Belarus, the Belarusian Union of Journalists, and the chairman of the community, Naum Galperovich.
As Nikolai Ilyushenok noted, changes in the city's toponymy of Polotsk are historically justified and always involve the participation of the city's residents. Public opinion is being studied for two months. If the citizens perceive the proposed changes positively, the issue is submitted for discussion by deputies, and they make the final decision at the session. The community's proposal will be considered according to a similar scheme. -0-
