In the Vorobyovy Gory tract in Gorodok, the memory of the victims of fascism was honored
– Khatyn is a symbol of thousands of burned villages, some of which were located in the Vitebsk region. The memory of these events has no time or boundaries. It once again emphasizes how fragile and important peace is for all of us, and reminds us at what cost freedom and independence were achieved. To pay tribute to the memory is a sacred duty for us, – noted the head of the region.
Alexander Subbotin emphasized that although the perpetrators of the tragedy in Khatyn were duly punished in the early 1960s, new historical facts of genocide against the Belarusian people are being revealed.
— On the territory of the Gorodok district during the military hardship, more than 300 settlements were destroyed, some of them never revived, — said the Chairman of the Gorodok District Executive Committee, Irina Polyakova. — And today we are carrying out serious work to preserve historical memory. It is our duty not to let the truth be distorted, and to preserve a peaceful and dignified future for our children through creative work. We realize that a state that does not know its past is incapable of building the future.
Across the country, on March 22nd at exactly 12 o'clock, Belarusians united in a common desire to honor the memory of the fallen with a minute of silence. Only the sound of a metronome broke the silence that reigned at the Pantheon of Memory. After the rally, grateful descendants laid flowers and wreaths at the burial site of civilians who died during the Nazi occupation.
