The solemn ceremony honoring the laureates of the I Literary Prize named after Petrus Brovka of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee for the results of 2012 took place today at the M. Gorky City Library. "This literary prize is being awarded for the first time and is designed to support writers and poets of the Vitebsk region, to recognize their contribution to the development of national literature and culture. The naming of the prize after Petrus Brovka is not accidental. He is a talented poet, a native of the Ushachi district, and holds significant importance for the Vitebsk region. His works are included in the school curriculum, are imbued with deep love for his homeland, and enjoy well-deserved popularity to this day," emphasized Petr Podgursky, Deputy Head of the Culture Department of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee.
The criteria for selecting the winners included the relevance of the works, their significance for Belarusian literature and culture, as well as regional importance. Explaining the latter criterion, Petr Podgursky cited the works of Galina and Sergey Trefimovs, including "Bukvar' Orshanski", as an example. These works are based on the history of the Orsha region, popularize the history and culture of this region, and foster love for the small homeland in young readers, primarily those from Orsha, from the earliest age.
The Petrus Brovka Literary Prize of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee will be awarded annually.
