In Vitebsk, a man who attempted to rape a minor girl has been sentenced to 9 years and 6 months of imprisonment, as reported to a BELTA correspondent by the Deputy Prosecutor of Vitebsk, Dmitry Orekhvo.

The attempted rape occurred in September 2014. The suspect in the criminal case (born in 1965) lived in a basement on Gagarin Street and made a living by collecting and selling scrap metal, bottles, and other recyclables. In the courtyard, the homeless man noticed the girl (born in 2008), led the child away from home, and attempted to rape her. Upon returning home, the girl recounted the incident, and the accused was apprehended by law enforcement officers.

During the investigation, the man fully admitted his guilt. For the attempted rape (Part 1 of Article 14 and Part 3 of Article 166 of the Criminal Code of Belarus), the accused was sentenced to 9 and a half years of imprisonment, to be served in a strict-regime penal colony. The sentence has entered into legal force.

Commenting on the circumstances of the criminal case, Dmitry Orekhvo emphasized that the reason for the attempted crime was, in part, inadequate parental supervision – the child was unsupervised on the street and willingly went with a stranger.
