In Vitebsk, couples of the first regional New Year's ball twirled on the parquet floor

The first regional New Year's Ball, featuring the best students from higher education institutions and cadets from Vitebsk and Polotsk Cadet Schools, is taking place in the city on the Dvina River.

The celebration began in the Philharmonic's concert hall. Here, the region's head, Nikolai Sherstnev, presented diplomas and commemorative souvenirs to the best students and cadets of the Vitebsk region. He wished the youth to build upon their achievements and enhance their knowledge. "I believe a good tradition is being laid today for a long time to come. I would like to revive the art of ballroom dancing, those dances that have been forgotten, as they are part of our people's history. We are starting with you, young people," the chairman addressed the youth.

After the award ceremony, the symphony orchestra and soloists of the regional philharmonic invited guests to a classical music concert.

About 300 people arrived at the first regional ball, including 30 dance couples. Among them were young people from the Vitebsk State University named after P.M. Masherov, Andrey Astakhov and Marta Kurlóvich. "We didn't know each other before the ball; the invitation to an event of this scale was unexpected. We didn't know these dances, at most the waltz from school for graduation, so we prepared intensively for the ball for a month. It's good that such a tradition is being revived, as old dances convey the era of those times," the young people noted.

The second part of the celebration will move to the Philharmonic's ballroom. Beautiful young couples will whirl in a waltz, perform a Hungarian dance, a polonaise, and a mazurka. The regional ball is part of the program of the republican charity event "Our Children."
