Laureates of the "Civil Courage" Award Honored in Vitebsk
By good tradition, on February 23, Defender of the Fatherland and Armed Forces Day of the Republic of Belarus, the Department of Internal Affairs of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee solemnly honors the laureates of the "Civic Courage" award. This year, among them are not only residents of the region who helped prevent a crime, but also those who, literally risking their lives, saved a human life.
We are talking about Yevgeny Prokhoronok, a student of the Novopolotsk State Polytechnic College, and Sergey Gudym, an employee of "Polotsk-Steklovolokno," awarded in the "For Courage and Decisiveness" nomination. This winter, they saved a resident of Polotsk who had fallen through the ice, who was intoxicated and decided to walk across the Western Dvina River. If not for the coordinated actions of his rescuers, who heard cries for help, disaster would have been inevitable. Stepping onto the fragile ice, they pulled the victim out of the icy water. The man was admitted to intensive care with hypothermia, but the main thing is that he remained alive.
In the "For Indifference" nomination, Vitebsk residents Elena and Pavel Gasevsky were recognized. They witnessed a blatant incident. In the park, a robber attacked a disabled woman and snatched her bag. Without a second thought, Pavel rushed after the criminal. He caught up with him, knocked him to the ground, and held him until the arrival of the police squad, which was called by the wife of the decisive Vitebsk resident. As the hero of the events admitted himself, what surprised him most was that some people began to defend the robber, and even asked to let him go. However, the bandit is not destined to be free in the near future. From the stage of the assembly hall of the Department of Internal Affairs, Pavel stated just as decisively:
– In such moments, one should think not about the criminal, but about his innocent victim.
But perhaps the most attention was drawn on this day by the charming Sofia Bondarenko, who was recognized in the "Youngest Defender of Law and Order" nomination. The schoolgirl from Liozno is only ten years old, and her courage and quick wit are worthy of emulation. In front of Sofia's eyes, an unknown person snatched a bag of groceries from the hands of a pensioner. The girl did not get confused, but raised a fuss. She asked the adults attracted by her cries to call the police faster. And later, she confidently and clearly described the attacker's features, whom they soon founddetained. The young police assistant does not consider herself a hero. Her friends and classmates learned about the act worthy of respect not from the girl herself. "People need to be helped," she simply shared with journalists. And she admitted that she always not just worries, but acts if someone is in trouble. Once at a birthday party in a children's center, Sofia saw a crying girl who had gotten lost, and she did not ignore it either. Together they went to the duty room to find the baby's mother. Such responsibility and sensitivity are taught to the lively schoolgirl from Liozno by her parents and grandmother Svetlana.

The Head of the Internal Affairs Directorate of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, Colonel Andrei Lyubimov, congratulated all defenders of the Fatherland on February 23, and also sincerely thanked the laureates of the prize for their clearly expressed civic position, integrity, and inability to ignore injustice and crime.
