Schoolchildren who helped prevent a theft were awarded in Vitebsk

Schoolchildren in Vitebsk helped detain an offender. For their courage and civic responsibility, the children, their parents, and teachers were thanked today by the Head of the Internal Affairs Directorate of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, Ivan Kubrakov, reported the official representative of the Internal Affairs Directorate, Vitaly Sapronenko.

The ceremony took place at Secondary School No. 44. The heroes of the day are sixth-grader Diana Marchenko of Secondary School No. 28 and third-grader Nikita Yurman of Secondary School No. 44. "The children showed courage, resourcefulness, civic responsibility, and helped detain a lawbreaker," emphasized Vitaly Sapronenko. The events in question occurred in Vitebsk on Smolenskaya Street on the evening of September 11. Descending the stairs of the building, Nikita noticed a stranger near a neighbor's bicycle, which was chained to a railing with a cable. Seeing the boy, the stranger became flustered and started to descend, hiding his face from the child, but did not leave the entrance. This seemed strange to the child, and he shared his suspicions with friends who were playing in the yard. The children decided to follow the man, who, as they understood, intended to steal the bicycle.

Seeing the children entering the entrance, the man retreated and headed towards the neighboring building. The children followed him. In the neighboring yard, Diana saw a police car (employees of the Security Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs were on patrol) and asked the law enforcement officers for help. The police detained the stranger. He turned out to be a previously convicted citizen born in 1973, who fully admitted his guilt (he really intended to steal the bicycle). He is currently being checked for involvement in other similar thefts. The children received memorable gifts from the police.
