The renovated surgical building of the regional oncology center has been opened in Vitebsk

The second surgical building of the regional clinical oncology dispensary has been opened in Vitebsk today after a large-scale reconstruction.

The building was constructed in 1979, and its reconstruction began in 2007. During the construction work, the general oncology and head and neck tumor surgical oncology departments moved to radiological building No. 3, and the urology department moved to surgical building No. 5. Over the years of construction, almost nothing remained of the old building, much was replaced, and a fourth floor was added. The building has 150 beds.

The commissioning of the updated building will allow oncological surgeons to master new modern high-tech operations. These include video-assisted lobectomies, bilobectomies, pneumonectomies, circular and wedge resections of the trachea, microsurgical operations on the face, plastic aesthetic operations on the mammary gland, and others.

The Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, Nikolai Sherstnev, noted that this facility is important for the entire region. Annually, the polyclinic department of the regional oncology dispensary consults over 130,000 patients. More than 12,000 people are treated in the inpatient department, and up to 6,000 operations are performed per year. "Doctors perform a huge amount of work. Of course, previously there was crampedness and certain discomfort. With the commissioning of the new building, the working conditions for doctors will improve, and new methods in treating people will also be used," the governor noted and wished the medical staff productive work and fewer patients.

The importance and demand for the updated building are also confirmed by statistics. Every year, the number of cancer patients registered for dispensary observation after treatment increases. Currently, more than 39,000 patients are under supervision (this is every 29th resident of the Vitebsk region), of which almost 60% have been observed for five years or more.

The Chief Physician of the Regional Clinical Oncology Dispensary, Angela Tomchina, thanked the builders and regional authorities for their work and funding. "State-of-the-art equipment, an operating unit, a laboratory, and much more will allow us to perform high-tech surgeries that will change treatment approaches and improve the quality of patient care," noted the head of the medical institution.

Today, new high-tech methods for diagnosing and treating malignant neoplasms have been implemented at the Vitebsk Regional Clinical Oncology Dispensary. The morphological verification of malignant tumors has reached 97%, facilitated by the use of achievements in ultrasound and X-ray technology. In conjunction with the pathological anatomy bureau, immunohistochemical methods for cancer diagnosis are being used.

For early diagnosis of malignant tumors, work is underway to implement screening programs for prostate, breast, cervical, lung, and colorectal cancer in the Vitebsk region. High-tech and complex tumor treatment methods have been introduced by oncologists.

The Vitebsk Regional Clinical Oncology Dispensary is the main specialized multidisciplinary medical and preventive institution providing organization and oncological care in the northern region. The medical institution has 13 clinical departments. A day hospital operates, where outpatient chemotherapy and rehabilitation courses are conducted for up to 50 patients per day.
