A family friend attempted to rob a pensioner in Vitebsk

В Витебске пенсионера пытался ограбить друг семьи

In the morning of March 7, law enforcement agencies received a report from a pensioner, a resident of Vitebsk born in 1951, stating that a few minutes prior, he had opened the door to an unknown man who, threatening the applicant with a sawn-off shotgun, attempted to break into his apartment. However, upon encountering active resistance from the pensioner, he fled.

The applicant indicated that he could not remember the attacker's face because the man was wearing a mask with eye slits. However, he clearly remembered the perpetrator's clothing, height, and build.

Based on the description, the suspect was apprehended by police officers of the Department of Protection while the trail was still hot. At the time of detention, during a personal search, a balaclava with eye slits and a sawn-off hunting rifle were found on the man.

The Vitebsk City Department of the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Belarus has initiated a criminal case against the suspect under Article 207 (Robbery) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus.

It has already been established at the initial stage of the investigation that the 36-year-old suspect was a friend of the victim's family and a colleague of his son-in-law. From everyday conversations, the attacker knew that the pensioner had some savings and kept them at home. In order to prevent the victim from recognizing a familiar person as the perpetrator, the suspect not only used a mask with eye slits during the attack but also attempted to disguise his voice.

Currently, the suspect is giving incriminating testimony and cooperating with the investigation. The man has no prior convictions and explains his criminal actions by a desire to obtain money easily.
