In Vitebsk, the memory of the victims of fascist camps was honored at the '5th Regiment' memorial
On the International Day of the Liberation of Prisoners of Fascist Concentration Camps, a traditional memorial event for the victims of Nazism was held in Vitebsk at a site sacred to every citizen, where the death camp "5th Regiment" was located.
For the first time, the event was held without veterans of the Great Patriotic War. And, according to the Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Council of Deputies, Vladimir Terentyev, the public association of former minor prisoners of fascism made the right decision: not to test the health of elderly people during the difficult epidemiological situation.
Representatives of the authorities – Vladimir Terentyev, Deputy Chairman of the Regional Executive Committee Vladimir Penin, Chairman of the City Executive Committee Vadim Zaryankin, Chairman of the City Council of Deputies Vladimir Beleevich, as well as Chairman of the regional organization of veterans Sergey Olsevich, Chairman of the city council of the public association of veterans Larisa Olenskaya – gathered to lay wreaths and flowers at the monument and honor the memory of those who died in concentration camps, which, according to various estimates, amounted to 11-12 million victims.
The death camp "5th Regiment" operated from the beginning of the occupation until the liberation of Vitebsk in 1944. Here, the Nazis brutally tortured and shot tens of thousands of citizens.

- There are 3,200 former concentration camp prisoners living in the Vitebsk region. These are mainly former child prisoners, but now they are over 80 years old. Almost all of them have already been paid financial assistance, and by May 9, they will also receive a medal for the 75th anniversary of Victory, - V. Terentyev noted in a conversation with journalists.
