In Vitebsk, the memory of the victims of the genocide crime was honored
The UN General Assembly decided to observe this date on December 9 not by chance: it was on this day in 1948 that the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide was adopted.
In 2022, Belarus adopted the law "On the Genocide of the Belarusian People" to preserve the memory of millions of Soviet citizens who became victims during the Great Patriotic War and the post-war period. Every third resident of Belarus perished at the hands of the occupiers and their accomplices. Another tragic page of that period was the total extermination of the Jewish population.
In Vitebsk, events dedicated to the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide were held in the city center. Representatives of regional and city authorities, public organizations, and clergy laid flowers at the memorial sign "To the Unparalleled Courage of Soviet Patriots Executed on this Spot by the German-Fascist Invaders in 1941-1944" near the Town Hall.
Employees of the regional museum of local lore also organized excursions for schoolchildren to the former Gestapo prison (Krylova St., 7).
