From February 19 to March 11, 2014, the regional exhibition-competition on knitting "Krunki zimy" will be held at the State Institution "Vitebsk Regional Methodological Center of Folk Art".

Knitting is one of the types of weaving, which is based on interlocking loops of a single thread using simple tools by hand (crochet hook, knitting needles, needle, etc.). The technique of crocheting – also known as "szydełko" in Polish – and knitting with 2 or 5 needles is well known and loved by Belarusian craftswomen, both in villages and among the urban population. They create beautiful lace tablecloths and napkins, warm scarves and fashionable hats, knit traditional socks and mittens, and much more. All these items in the Vitebsk region today are made using various techniques, the combination of which results in complex openwork, patterned jacquard, and other fashionable knits. But such beauty began to flourish in the Vitebsk land only in the 20th century. What was before?
