The first city career guidance olympiad for schoolchildren was held in Vitebsk
The staffing issue is relevant for many sectors of the national economy. Industrial enterprises are particularly interested in attracting talented young specialists. Many have long established close ties with various educational institutions for this purpose and hold informational meetings with schoolchildren. Industrial excursions are also a regular practice. The engineering company "Vitstroytehmash" was perhaps the first in the country to take an unconventional practical step in this direction. The enterprise supported the initiative of the education department of the Vitebsk City Executive Committee to hold a physics and mathematics career guidance Olympiad for students in grades 9-11. The basis for its holding was Gymnasium No. 1 in Vitebsk named after Zhores Alferov, which introduced a specialized engineering class for the first time this academic year.
The interest in the project turned out to be high. Over 200 students from various schools in the city decided to test their skills in the qualifying round. 60 of the best advanced to the finals. Recently, the winners of the "Element of Engineering" Olympiad were awarded. Each of them is a welcome guest at "Vitstroytehmash" after graduating from a university or college, emphasizes the general director of the enterprise, Andrey Sidorov:
— Our enterprise has established close cooperation through various programs with universities and colleges. But we decided to go further. This Olympiad is held so that children understand what an engineer means for the real sector of the economy today. What this profession is, why it is needed, and also to realize the contribution of people who have dedicated themselves to this path to the achievements of the real sector of the economy. Based on my own experience, I can assert that worldwide, the focus is now on technical engineering education.
Andrey Sidorov stressed the importance of timely career guidance work among graduates, whose choice should be thoughtful and conscious. Moreover, it is necessary to start preparing for the choice of a future profession from the sixth grade, he is convinced:
— Engineering specialties are complex, but in-demand and creative. And so that children can more clearly understand the result of this work and what the final product of engineering thought is, we brought a demonstration equipment manufactured at our enterprise.
The head of "Vitstroytehmash" also noted that the enterprise employs 300 people. A large part of them are young people aged 30-35, including among the engineering and design staff. Thanks to their innovative ideas, the company is actively developing. A number of innovative projects are underway, including the construction of a new multi-brand machine-building plant.
Gleb Sinyakov, a student of the Educational Institution "Secondary School No. 1 of Vitebsk named after J. I. Alferov", like other winners of the Olympiad, will be gladly welcomed at "Vitstroytehmash" after graduating from university or college.
One of the participants in the Olympiad was Alexander Mashuk, a tenth-grader from Secondary School No. 1 named after J. I. Alferov. The young man studies in a physics and mathematics class and plans to enter BNTU for an engineering specialty:
— I like this field because, on the one hand, it is about precisein natural sciences, which were easier for me than other subjects from the primary grades, and on the other hand, it opens up broad creative prospects. Therefore, I was interested in the opportunity to participate in this Olympiad. It's a good chance to test my abilities. I have no doubts about my choice of profession because I have been on excursions to the Vitebsk HPP, Vitebskenergo, and Vitebsk Lifts. The technologies used there leave a strong impression.
According to Svetlana Doroshchenko, Head of the Education Department of the Vitebsk City Executive Committee, there are not many engineering classes in Vitebsk yet. Along with Gymnasium No. 1, they operate in Gymnasium No. 8, secondary schools No. 2, No. 31, and No. 45.
— I hope that next year there will be more of them, including thanks to the interest in this topic generated by the "Element of Engineering" Olympiad. We plan to expand this project so that children from different parts of the region can showcase their talents.
