The regional marathon along the sites of the Khatyn tragedy "Memory Autotrain" has started in Vitebsk
From Vitebsk this morning, the "Memory Train" set off for the sites of the Khatyn tragedy. More than 300 people became its participants – youth activists, representatives of enterprises and organizations, and public associations.
The first stop of the auto marathon route was the Memorial Complex in honor of the Soviet liberator soldiers, partisans, and underground fighters of the Vitebsk region, where the participants of the train held the patriotic campaign of the BRSM "Memory of the Heart," honored the memory of all those who died during the Great Patriotic War with a minute of silence, and laid flowers at the Eternal Flame. The importance of this campaign was emphasized by the Deputy Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, Vyacheslav Durnov:
- These days we mark a sorrowful date – 80 years ago, the village of Khatyn, which subsequently became a symbol of all burned villages in Belarus, was brutally destroyed along with all its inhabitants. Its residents dreamed, raised children, but the war cut all this short. There are many such examples, including in our region. This memory must live in our hearts. Only its careful preservation will help us build our happy, beautiful, strong country. The future of our people is in the hands of the youth.
The importance of preserving historical heritage, addressing the youth wing of the auto marathon participants, was also emphasized by the First Secretary of the Vitebsk Regional Committee of the BRSM, Vladimir Babichev:
- We are the heirs of the Great Victory. It depends only on us what mark the current descendants of the liberator people will leave in the history of their state. So let's start writing it with such important events that unite us all, so significant in the Year of Peace and Creation, the 85th anniversary of the Vitebsk region, and the 80th anniversary of the tragedy of the villages of Khatyn and Shunеvka. These are the important events of 2023 that we will carry through the entire activities of the Belarusian Republican Youth Union this year.
The next stops of the train will be the memorial complexes "Khatyn," "Shunеvka," and "Proryv." The time spent traveling between route points will also be productive. The marathon runners will be met with
educational information, thematic quizzes and contests, screening of film excerpts on the history of the Great Patriotic War.
