In Vitebsk, people are already nostalgic for the New Year

January 13, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. The New Year holidays are just coming to an end, and Vitebsk is already missing the New Year. The Old New Year is being celebrated at the regional museum of local lore with the exhibition "Nostalgia for the New Year," the museum's exhibition department staff told a BELTA correspondent. Hundreds of exhibits from the museum's collections tell about how people prepared for, congratulated each other, and celebrated the New Year in the 20th century. Postcards from the beginning of the century are displayed alongside cotton wool toys and paperweights from the first post-war years. A radio receiver, used to listen to the chimes on New Year's Eve because not every home had a television, is placed next to an artificial Christmas tree – a stylish item from the 60s. The custodians of the collections managed to recreate the interior of a room from the mid-20th century, prepared by caring hosts for the New Year celebration: a Christmas tree, garlands, a festive table with its traditional dishes, and, of course, a bottle of champagne in the center – the most scarce and very expensive drink at the time, which has since become an indispensable attribute of the holiday. As the museum staff noted, the exhibition was well-received by the townspeople. Just like the Old New Year, it evokes delight in children from another meeting with the holiday, and in adults – a slight sadness for their youth and carefree childhood. -0-
