In the Vitebsk region, an additional 80 thousand hectares of corn will be sown for feed

In the Vitebsk region in 2019, an additional 80 thousand hectares of corn will be sown for fodder. This was announced to journalists by the Deputy Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, Boris Efremov, before a seminar on livestock breeding, organization of preparation and conduct of spring field work, in response to a question from a BELTA correspondent.

"Feeling a shortfall in corn for the last two years, the sowing plan for 2019 includes additional areas for corn for fodder of 80 thousand hectares," said Boris Efremov.

In the upcoming season, farmers intend to harvest 2 million tons of haylage and the same amount of silage. Regarding the wintering of livestock, the deputy chairman of the regional executive committee emphasized that none of the districts need to transfer fodder; the region will calmly approach the pasture period. "This is due to the well-conducted work in the past season: the region entered wintering with an обеспеченность of 24.6 centners of fodder units per conventional head of cattle. Now it is important to observe the feeding regime, the balance of fodder, and work effectively with animal groups to get the maximum milk yield during this period," the head added.

Boris Efremov also reported that according to the results of 2018, the gross production of the agro-industrial complex of the Vitebsk region was higher than the previous year's level. In the upcoming season, the sown areas of grain crops will be 425 thousand hectares. A good start for the new harvest has been made in plowing stubble, sowing winter grain and cruciferous crops. This year, the region's farmers are firmly determined to achieve the set goal of 1 million tons of grain.
