In the Vitebsk region, more than Br1.6 million will be allocated to combat invasive plants in 2023

In the Vitebsk region, more than Br1.6 million will be allocated from the local budget in 2023 to combat Sosnowsky's hogweed and Canadian goldenrod. This was announced at a briefing on the control of the regional plan of measures for land reclamation and improvement of settlements by Viktor Galanov, Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Committee for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection.

Responsible services have systematized work to combat Sosnowsky's hogweed and Canadian goldenrod in recent years, noted Viktor Galanov. This invasive plant species for the region has been brought under control, and its growth area has been reduced. The focus in weed eradication in the Vitebsk region is on chemical control methods. As of November 1, work has been completed on more than 4.7 thousand hectares, exceeding the plan of more than 4.5 thousand hectares. More than 3.5 thousand hectares have been treated by chemical means.

"All economic entities this year have allowed a reduction in hogweed areas by only 26.5 hectares. This area is under the control of responsible services, territorial bodies of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection. Approaches to the organization and conduct of work are improved annually. In general, a satisfactory assessment has been given to our joint work with the National Academy of Sciences this year, and recommendations have been made. Taking these recommendations into account, we plan activities for next year, and funding has been determined," Viktor Galanov said.

The Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Committee for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection added that more than Br1.6 million will be allocated from the local budget alone to combat these plants in settlements and on agricultural lands. Plans for the eradication of Sosnowsky's hogweed and Canadian goldenrod are outlined in each district of the Vitebsk region. Inventories of their growth areas are conducted annually. Applications for procurement procedures for herbicides and services for carrying out work, indicating the areas, are being formed.

Sosnowsky's hogweed grows in the Vitebsk region on 3.640 thousand hectares, and Canadian goldenrod - on 309 thousand hectares.
