The Vitebsk region will host the "Attention - Children!" campaign and a unified traffic safety day

In the Vitebsk region, from August 25 to September 5, the "Attention - Children!" campaign will be held, and on August 27, a unified traffic safety day will take place. This was reported by the State Automobile Inspectorate of the Vitebsk region.

On the eve of the academic year, preventing road traffic injuries among children is a top priority for the State Automobile Inspectorate. From August 25 to September 5, during the "Attention - Children!" campaign, vehicles are required to drive with their low beam headlights or daytime running lights on during daylight hours to attract the attention of children and all road users.
"Since the beginning of the year, 4 children have died and 26 children have been injured in 27 accidents in the Vitebsk region. Parents need to remind young road users daily about the rules of safe behavior on the street and ensure that children follow them. Drivers should exercise special caution when driving in courtyards, near settlements, schools, and when approaching intersections and pedestrian crossings," the State Automobile Inspectorate noted.
Also, a preventive event will be held in the Vitebsk region on August 27, which will be a unified traffic safety day "Learn Safety Lessons from Childhood." On this day, adults will be reminded again of the main causes of traffic accidents involving children. These include ignorance of elementary traffic rules, lack of skills and habits to follow traffic rules for pedestrians, cyclists, and passengers, indiscipline or inattention on the street, as well as insufficient parental supervision of children's behavior on the roads.
The State Automobile Inspectorate draws attention to the fact that children cannot foresee danger or correctly estimate the distance to an approaching vehicle. Very often, they overestimate their abilities, considering themselves faster and more agile than they actually are. And the task of adults is to instill the foundations of road safety in a child by explaining traffic rules and setting a personal example.
A child is never legally at fault in a traffic accident, and therefore the role of drivers in ensuring safety increases significantly. They need to be extremely attentive, patient, and considerate not only when driving neareducational institutions, but also when approaching pedestrian crossings, parked cars, and other obstacles that limit visibility on the roadway.
"The most common mistakes made by children, which result in traffic accidents, are crossing the road in front of approaching transport, unexpectedly stepping onto the roadway from behind an obstacle, and crossing the road in the wrong place," the State Traffic Inspectorate reported. To prevent accidents, it is important to teach a child to look around, see the danger, and realistically assess their chances. Before taking the first step from the sidewalk, one must inspect the road in all directions. This should be brought to an automatic level.
