In the Vitebsk region, 4.3 thousand wartime munitions have been neutralized since the beginning of the year

Ammunition from the Great Patriotic War was found 30 meters from the railway tracks in the Dubrovensky district and neutralized, the information and public relations department of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee's Internal Affairs Directorate informed a BELTA correspondent. In the area of the village of Redki, 24 artillery shells of various calibers, 26 mortar mines of 32 and 50 mm caliber, and two hand grenades were found. The ammunition was transported to a safe place and destroyed by a demining group of military unit 5524 of the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus. As reported by military unit 5524, since the beginning of the current year, sappers have made 584 demining trips, during which they neutralized and destroyed 4,349 pieces of ammunition. For comparison, throughout 2009, the demining group made 589 trips and destroyed 4.5 thousand dangerous finds. Sappers explain this increase in demining operations by the growing awareness of citizens who, upon seeing objects resembling shells, do not pass by but call for specialists.
