Recidivist crime is decreasing in the Vitebsk region

June 18, Vitebsk, /Olga Bogacheva - BELTA/. A trend of reducing recidivism has emerged in the Vitebsk region, Yuri Ambros, Senior Prosecutor of the Investigation Supervision Department of the Vitebsk Regional Prosecutor's Office, told a BELTA correspondent. According to the results of January-May this year, persons with previous convictions committed 1.7 thousand crimes, which is 37.8% of the number of investigated criminal cases and 1.4% less compared to the same period last year. At the same time, the number of grave and especially grave crimes, including rape, robbery, banditry, hooliganism, and extortion, has decreased by half. A comprehensive set of measures is being implemented in the region to prevent the commission of repeat offenses. Thus, this year 203 people were sent to therapeutic and labor prophylactic institutions, 1.6 thousand were brought to administrative responsibility, 485 were registered with narcologists, and 48 were declared legally incompetent. As a result of the work of supervisory commissions, 4.2 thousand individuals released from places of detention received assistance in finding employment. To facilitate their reintegration into society, assistance is provided in obtaining passports, housing, and material aid. Work has begun on the creation of two resocialization centers in Vitebsk and Orsha for individuals released from places of detention. In these centers, they will be helped to re-establish lost social ties with society, restore documents, and find work. Regular meetings with previously convicted individuals are also held to reduce recidivism. Along with law enforcement officers, representatives of authorities, social protection and employment services, clergy, and public organizations participate in these meetings, the interlocutor added. -0-
