The Vitebsk region will select the region with the safest road traffic conditions, the head of the agitation and propaganda department of the traffic police department of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee's Internal Affairs Directorate, Olesya Seregina, told a BELTA correspondent. The regional review competition will be held until December 10. During this period, traffic police officers will have to assess the degree of compliance with traffic rules, and the mutual courtesy of drivers and pedestrians in each of the regions. The use of retroreflective elements by the public, the equipping of bicycles and horse-drawn carts with such elements, and the presence of retroreflective vests for cyclists will also be taken into account. The level of general maintenance of the street and road network, the availability of road signs, automatic traffic control devices, and lighting at night will also be assessed. Among other criteria are the effectiveness of the preventive work of the State Automobile Inspectorate inspectors themselves, and the attitude of the local executive authorities towards solving problematic issues of ensuring road safety. Based on all the data, the responsible commission of the traffic police department of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee's Internal Affairs Directorate will summarize the results of the competition and name the three prize-winners. The campaign is being held to draw public attention to the problem of road safety among all categories of road users. According to data as of November 5, 597 traffic accidents occurred in the Vitebsk region, which is 135 fewer incidents compared to the same period last year. 151 people were killed in accidents (6 fewer) and 610 were injured (137 fewer). 61 traffic accidents involving children were recorded, in which 6 minors were killed and 55 were injured. -0-
