In the Vitebsk region, going out on the ice is prohibited

The Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee has issued an order prohibiting going out on the ice. In the near future, a corresponding decision for the period of ice formation will be made locally by authorities, the Vitebsk Regional Department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported.

This decision is due to the increased danger of being on reservoirs where the ice thickness is still insufficient, as well as the death of two fishermen. The accidents occurred on December 1 in the Gorodok and Rossony districts. The men did not have any rescue equipment with them.

Preventive talks on this topic will also be held in educational institutions.

According to the chairman of the regional organization of OSVOD, Alexander Myasoedov, the current ice thickness on the region's reservoirs is about 3-4 cm; up to 7 cm is considered unsafe, and it is not recommended to go out on reservoirs at this time. "Last year, during the ice formation period, neglecting safety rules cost the lives of three fishermen," emphasized Alexander Myasoedov. He also drew attention to the fact that the ice is currently particularly dangerous due to the fallen snow, which slows down its formation.
