New units have been opened at the Vitebsk Medical Rehabilitation Center for Afghan War Veterans

В Витебском центре медреабилитации для воинов-афганцев открыли новые подразделения
New speleotherapy and multifactorial relaxation departments opened today at the Vitebsk Regional Clinical Center for Medical Rehabilitation for Disabled and Veterans of Military Operations in Other States. The specialized rooms have supplemented the already extensive list of treatment methods used by Vitebsk rehabilitation specialists. It is noteworthy that in the unique relaxation room, sessions are structured to engage various senses simultaneously. Touch – tactile (in the form of a massage chair), sight (special videos on a large LCD monitor), smell (aromas), and hearing (music therapy using headphones). Comprehensive programs contribute to maximum human relaxation.

In recent years, medical professionals have been gradually implementing more and more new, modern, and effective methods for treating and rehabilitating individuals who participated in combat operations. During the center's existence (which is almost 30 years), over 70,000 patients have undergone a course of restorative treatment here. First and foremost, this medical institution is well-known to those who fulfilled their international duty in Afghanistan, which is why it is still popularly called the "Afghan Center."
A year ago, the rehabilitation center celebrated its long-awaited housewarming – a new building was commissioned, which expanded its capacity by 60 beds and opened a modern medical and diagnostic complex with the latest equipment. Standard gyms and a robotic exercise machine hall, kinesiotherapy and manual therapy, a stabilometric platform, auricular reflexology... There is even an excellently equipped Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine! The new building has also provided new opportunities for further improvement of the facility. Thus, the series of housewarmings continues.

"Together with scientists from the Department of Medical Rehabilitation of VGMU, we are implementing the most effective treatment methods," says the center's chief physician, Vladislav Muzhichenko. "We are now opening speleotherapy and multifactorial relaxation rooms. This will help in treating patients with lung diseases and post-traumatic stress disorders."

It is noteworthy that the housewarmings are timed to coincide with the 34th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. And the large-scale renovation, which is being carried out in the center, affects not only the exclusively medical part – here, halls have also been updated, and a "Corner of Memory for Internationalist Soldiers" has been equipped. Now, the physiotherapy department is preparing for renovation and the elevator in the old building is being replaced.

The patients themselves are very happy with the changes. Yuri Nikitin is a former howitzer crew commander.

– I fought in Bagram for more than a year. Fortunately, I escaped without injuries. But my health still deteriorated significantly... Therefore, for over 20 years now, I have undergone rehabilitation here annually, in this wonderful health resort. After the course of treatment, my strength increases at least threefold, – smiles the brave veteran.

Vyacheslav Yankovsky, a former deputy platoon commander of air defense forces, who served in Egypt in 1970–1971, supports his comrade's opinion. Former soldiers and officers, as well as their family members, can now use the most modern methods of recovery from ailments. The highly professional team of doctors and nurses will certainly help them. This is also assured by the guests present during the opening of the new departments – Deputy Chairman of the Regional Executive Committee Vyacheslav Durnov, Head of the Healthcare Department Mikhail Vishnevetsky, as well as representatives of veteran organizations.
