The Vidzy Church in the Braslav District will appear on postcards
This year marks the centenary of the construction of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the urban settlement of Vidzy, Braslav district. "Belpochta" is preparing to issue an artistic marked postcard dedicated to this event. It is scheduled to be released on March 27.
One of the tallest churches in our country is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of the Republic of Belarus. It was built of red brick in 1914 in the center of the town of Vidzy, historically known as Trinity. However, now the church houses the parish of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is why it is remembered by this name.
During World War I, due to its height, the Catholic church became a victim of artillery shells. Shell damage from hostilities can still be seen today. World War II also left its mark on the shrine. Later, the Soviet authorities used the church as a warehouse for flax and grain, and later it housed a sports hall for youth, where they even played football.
During perestroika in 1989, the church was returned to believers. Reconstruction of the shrine began. Gradually, the towers, the huge rose window above the main entrance, and the fences were repaired.
The neo-Gothic architecture continues to fascinate many with its monumentality and exoticism.
