Vitebsk resident sentenced to four years for mobile phone fraud

A resident of Vitebsk has been sentenced to four years in prison for mobile phone fraud, as reported to BelTA by the official representative of the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Belarus for the Vitebsk region, Inna Gorbacheva.

For more than three months, a resident of the regional center, born in 1985, purchased expensive mobile phones on installment plans using other people's passports. To do this, he sought out citizens in the regional center who agreed, for a small monetary reward of about Br50,000, to provide their passports for the purchase of a mobile phone on installment in their name. The man made the initial payment, paid the monetary reward for the service rendered, undertook the obligation to pay the installments, and then left for Russia, where he sold the mobile phone at a higher price. He did not intend to fulfill his obligations to pay the installments, evading meetings with the deceived citizens who were looking for the fraudster after receiving demand letters indicating outstanding installment payments for the purchased goods.

The court qualified the actions of the Vitebsk resident under Article 209 (fraud) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus. The sentence has entered into legal force.
