Vitebsk may become one of the first regional centers in Belarus to implement 'Smart City' technologies.

Vitebsk may become one of the first regional centers in Belarus where the latest "Smart City" information technologies will be implemented by local enterprises. This idea was voiced by the General Director of OJSC "Vityaz" Sergey Ganko and was met with great interest by the heads of IT enterprises in the region during a joint meeting of the regional Council of Deputies and the employers' union, which was held at the branch of RUP "Beltelecom" in Vitebsk. The main topic of the meeting was the discussion of the region's development prospects based on the results of the fifth All-Belarusian People's Assembly.

– The results of the past five-year period in the Vitebsk region indicate that the main socio-economic indicators have been met, – noted Chairman of the Regional Council of Deputies Vladimir Terentyev. – Our region took second place and was entered on the Republican Honor Board.

Vladimir Terentyev emphasized that the Vitebsk region has a powerful industrial potential, which accounts for 15% of the republican volume.

Over the past five years, about 200 new enterprises have been created, large-scale modernization of "Vitebskdrev", Vitebsk Oil Extraction Plant, and the branch of the "Krasnaya Zvezda" paper mill has been completed. Large projects are being implemented at the Orsha Flax Mill, RUP "Vitebskenergo", in the "Marko" holding, and OJSC "Naftan". Today, products manufactured in the northern region are supplied to 86 countries worldwide, and new markets in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa are being developed. The positive balance of foreign trade operations in 2015 exceeded the planned indicators by 1.4 times.

Speaking about the prospects, Vladimir Terentyev noted that all economic entities' activities should be aimed at improving the population's living standards through innovative development, increasing the economy's competitiveness, expanding and diversifying exports, creating new jobs, and attracting investments.

– The current five-year period should be a turning point in the socio-economic life of the region in terms of the scale of changes in all sectors.

Поэтому первоочередная задача – снижение зависимости от этих гигантов. Мы должны загрузить другие предприятия, прежде всего использующие лес, торф, которыми богата наша область. Также будут введены в строй новые объекты. В приоритете – инвестиции, проекты с высокой окупаемостью, снижение затрат, передовые технологии.

Один из ярких примеров высокотехнологичных предприятий региона – филиал РУП «Белтелеком», где сегодня трудится более двух тысяч специалистов и предоставляется свыше 100 видов услуг электросвязи для более чем миллиона абонентов. Руководитель филиала Александр Боханрассказал собравшимся, что сейчас активно развивается программа проведения оптоволоконных линий, позволяющих значительно увеличить скорость интернета и внедрить новые услуги на Витебщине. Сейчас новая линия проведена в 91,5 тыс. из 304 тыс. домовладений в многоквартирных домах, а к 2019 году связисты обещают закончить этот процесс. Также совместно с Министерством образования РУП «Белтелеком» за собственные средства реализует программу «Скоростной интернет – в каждую школу». Сегодня оптоволоконные линии проведены в 30% учреждений образования региона, а к концу 2017-го высокоскоростной интернет будет во всех школах.

– Все это в комплексе открывает огромные возможности для развития информационных технологий, – подчеркнул Александр Бохан. – Интернет станет не только быстрее, но и дешевле, появятся новые услуги, в том числе такие, как «Умный дом», а потом и «Умный город». Уже сейчас у нас более 100 абонентов, которые после установки датчиков и видеокамер с помощью смартфона полностью контролируют собственное жилье. Недавно я был в Гонконге, и там пошли еще дальше: многомиллионный город стал «умным». Там установлено множество автономных «умных столбов», которые оснащены розетками для зарядкиelectric vehicles, communication, video cameras, record a multitude of indicators. This is the future.

After hearing Alexander Bokhan, the heads of enterprises stated that they are already capable of producing their own experimental "smart pole" and installing it in Vitebsk. Deputies of the regional Council of Deputies promised to consider the possibility of creating a corresponding regional program.
