Vitebsk region intends to expand the sowing area of winter hybrid rye

Vitebsk region intends to expand the cultivation area of winter hybrid rye. This was announced to journalists by the Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, Nikolai Sherstnev, following a republican teleconference on crop harvesting.

"This year, about 5 thousand hectares have been sown in total. For next year, we plan to cultivate the crop on an area of about 20 thousand hectares," said the governor.

He emphasized that winter hybrid rye is a high-yielding crop that can yield more than 100 centners per hectare. However, the plant is less demanding in terms of cultivation conditions than, for example, wheat.

"The Vitebsk region has sufficient land that can be used for winter rye. These lands are not productive for wheat, and we would like to replace ordinary winter rye with hybrid rye. This will significantly increase yields and gross harvest. This is the economic efficiency of production that the head of state spoke about today and which we are orienting specialists towards," noted Nikolai Sherstnev.
