The Vitebsk region intends to significantly update its school bus fleet

Vitebsk region intends to significantly update its school bus fleet in 2017. This was announced by the Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, Nikolai Sherstnev, who took part in a meeting of the presidium of the Vitebsk Regional Council of Deputies.

One of the agenda items was the development of the region's education system. The head of the region noted that the main goals of the process are to improve the quality of education and create equal opportunities for all children. "We must provide children with a decent education, regardless of whether a child lives in a city or a small village," emphasized the head of the region.

The improvement of the network of institutions is carried out by closing small rural schools and strengthening the material base of institutions in large settlements. They should become educational centers where children from nearby villages will come to study. "In 2017, we will replace the entire school bus fleet. Currently, a third of the transport is in unsatisfactory condition, and its service life is over 10 years. Along with this, it is necessary to put in order and repair the roads along which children will be transported to schools," said Nikolai Sherstnev.

"I am also concerned about the fate of the premises that we are leaving. Schools are closing, but good buildings remain. Local authorities must find a solution. An agro-tourism estate, a health resort, a tourist or sports facility can be located here. Such buildings must be registered and options for their use considered, discussing proposals and initiatives from the public, as well as proposals from entrepreneurs. They cannot be abandoned under any circumstances. This is not in the state interest," emphasized the governor. Currently, key schools are being identified in each district, which will be developed.

"These are promising schools where we will invest money. By 2017, we must complete the optimization work so as not to return to this issue for the next 5 years, or preferably 10. Of course, problems will arise. For example, in Braslav district, there are large distances between settlements. Here, it may be advisable to

schools to establish boarding facilities. So that children from remote villages could live here for a whole week, under the supervision of teachers and educators. And go home only for weekends and during holidays," noted Nikolai Sherstnev.

He noted that the work on improving the school network should be carried out comprehensively and systematically in close contact with authorities, teachers, parents, and students.
