Vitebsk region is completing the planting of potatoes and open-ground vegetables

Farmers in the Vitebsk region are completing the planting of potatoes and open-ground vegetables, the Committee for Agriculture and Food of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee reported.

The region has fully completed the plan for sowing carrots (106 ha, or 101% of the plan), beets (45 ha, or 100%), and onions (42 ha, or 131%). Cabbage has been planted on an area of 51 ha (42% of the plan), and potatoes on 1.7 thousand ha (90% respectively). The planting of the latter crop has been increased this year by 200 ha to 2.1 thousand ha.

Currently, the focus of farmers in the northern region is on corn, the acreage of which has also significantly increased this year. The crop already occupies 91.3 thousand ha, or 76% of the plan. Last year, by this date, 71.7 thousand ha, or about 72%, had been sown. Among the leaders are Lepel (89.9% of the plan), Chashniksky (89.1%), Tolochinsky and Dubrovensky (86% each) districts. Farmers in the Ushachy district, who started sowing corn later than others because they were focused on a group of early spring grain and leguminous crops, are just reaching the halfway point. "Now all forces in the district are thrown into this work, local farmers have already gained maximum momentum," the regional agricultural department noted.

The established rainy weather is making certain adjustments to the work throughout the region, however, farmers of the Vitebsk region intend to complete the planned corn sowing by May 25.
