Vitebsk region completes potato harvesting with the highest yield in the republic

Vitebsk region farmers are completing potato harvesting with the highest yield in the republic at 283 centners per hectare. This was reported by the Committee for Agriculture and Food of the Regional Executive Committee.

In the region, 99.4% of potato fields (3,663 hectares) have been harvested, and 104 thousand tons of tubers have been dug. The average yield of the crop exceeds 283 centners per hectare. "This is the highest indicator among the regions; the average yield across the republic is 218 centners per hectare. Compared to last year, the yield from the region's potato fields has increased by almost 50 centners per hectare," the committee noted. They added that potato harvesting in the region will be fully completed in 1-2 days.

The absolute record holder among the potato-growing organizations of the region is the Tolochin Cannery, with a yield of the "second bread" at 534.5 centners per hectare. "Such a yield per hectare is the best indicator not only in the region but also in the republic," emphasized the regional agricultural department. Over 48 thousand tons of potatoes have been harvested from the cannery's fields, which is almost half of the region's total harvest. Several farms in the region have yields exceeding 300 centners per hectare, including the Rodnik farm enterprise in the Shumilino district (337 centners per hectare), the Ol'govskoye agricultural enterprise in the Vitebsk district (331 centners per hectare), the Varmas farm enterprise in the Vitebsk district (314 centners per hectare), and OAO Prudinki in the Verkhnedvinsk district (302 centners per hectare).

Speaking about the harvest in general, specialists emphasized that this work in the region is already practically completed: flax remains to be harvested from 300 hectares, corn from 4 thousand hectares, and cabbage from 10 hectares. The main efforts of the farmers are now concentrated on plowing the stubble fields. The machinery has covered 69 thousand hectares, or 24% of the planned areas.
