Vitebsk walruses will compete in swimming on Epiphany

Vitebsk "walruses" will try Epiphany water today, the head of the city group of winter hardening enthusiasts, swimming coach of the "Molodost" pool, Stanislav Shumykov, told a BELTA correspondent. This year, the venue for water procedures will be the recently equipped Vitebsk pier on Lyudnikov Avenue, which has become one of the favorite recreation spots for citizens. An ice hole in the shape of a cross, 8.5 m long and about 1.5 m wide, is already ready. Before the event, it will be consecrated by a specially invited clergyman. Then the immersion itself will take place. According to Stanislav Shumykov, about 50 people will gather to pay tribute to the Epiphany tradition. Among them will be both believers and lovers of winter hardening, represented by different age categories. Thus, the most experienced Vitebsk "walrus" is already over 70 years old, and teenagers aged 11-13 will demonstrate the vigor of spirit and strength of body of the younger generation. In addition to the threefold immersion, the most resilient participants of the event will compete for the longest stay in the water and the longest swim. Winners will be greeted with stormy applause from spectators and diplomas. Epiphany bathing has been held by Vitebsk "walruses" since 2003.
