Vitebsk Medical University Opens Sports and Recreation Center
The grand opening of the fitness club "Fortius" in dormitory No. 5 will take place on October 31st. The facility was built and equipped with the university's own funds. It includes a gym and a fitness room, both equipped with modern equipment and an air conditioning system. Classes at the club will be organized for university students and staff free of charge. "This idea has been in the making for over a decade," noted Olga Syrodoeva, Vice-Rector for Educational and Ideological Work at VSMU. "In the early 2000s, the university administration decided to close the student cafeteria on the basement floor of dormitory No. 5, as there was simply no need for it. And the idea arose to use the freed-up space for a physical culture and health center. A student construction team was even formed, which was involved in the space's renovation: dismantling partitions, removing construction debris, and preparing the premises for repairs. Then the work was suspended. But under the new rector, Anatoly Shchastny, what was started was brought to completion. And to the highest standards."
The two modern sports halls will also be used in the educational process for senior students who choose, on a voluntary basis, health improvement activities, step aerobics, tai-bo, stretching, Pilates, jump-fit, and other types of fitness. Additionally, lecturers from the Department of Medical Rehabilitation will conduct classes in the "Grace" and "Women's Self-Defense" health groups here.
On November 1st, powerlifting competitions will be held at the new gym, forming part of the university's birthday celebration program. Other spectacular events planned include a ceremonial meeting and a festive concert, a flash mob "Let's Sing the University Anthem Together," and a quest game "History of VSMU."
