Vitebsk Medical University to create a modern simulation training center

Vitebsk State Medical University plans to create a modern simulation training center in 2019 and open it in the new academic year, as reported to a BELTA correspondent by the university's rector, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Anatoly Shchastny.

The center is designed for students to master practical treatment skills and diagnostic methodologies in a simulated environment, and to form and improve the professional competencies of students. The facility is planned to be equipped with modern training tools and technologies, including simulators, robot simulators, imitative manikins, and other interactive computerized and telecommunication equipment.

"Our task is to provide teachers with the opportunity to constantly stay in touch with students practicing in the center using mobile gadgets, in order to coordinate and adjust the educational process online, and analyze mistakes," noted Anatoly Shchastny.

The equipment will be purchased under a targeted national program using funds from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The simulation center will be located in a three-story building of the former medical unit of OJSC "Vityaz", the reconstruction and modernization of which will begin in the near future. According to the project, up to 300 students in various medical care areas will be able to study there simultaneously. Since the learning process will be highly computerized, a significant part of the work is related to laying fiber optic networks. Reconstruction within the building includes, in particular, the possibility of transforming premises, for example, from a classroom into a virtual operating room.

According to the plan, the equipment will arrive in the autumn of next year, so the general construction work must be completed by September, clarified the rector of VSMU. The creation of this innovative platform is driven by the need to make education at the university more practice-oriented. By thenyet students show increased interest in such educational technologies, so the practical training center existing at the medical university can no longer cope with the loads.

The new simulation center will operate daily until 9:00 PM to give students the opportunity to use their time as effectively as possible for mastering and consolidating knowledge and skills, and for preparing for tests and exams, said Anatoly Shchastny. In addition, the university intends to use this platform for practical training in emergency care skills for employees of operational services, enterprises and organizations, as well as for working with schoolchildren, including career guidance.
