May 21, Vitebsk / Olga Bogacheva - BELTA /. The Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee rejected the carriers' proposal to increase the fare in urban public transport by 40% to Br700, a BELTA correspondent reports.

The proposal to increase the fare was considered during the discussion of the development of transport services in the region. Thus, the main indicators of socio-economic development of RATP "Vitebskoblavtotrans", Vitebsk branch of Belarusian Railways and Vitebsk airport were fulfilled. However, the volumes of cargo and passenger transportation are decreasing. For example, for the Vitebsk branch of Belarusian Railways, this figure for 2008 was 96.6% of the 2007 level, and "Vitebskoblavtotrans" reduced passenger transportation by 20.6% during this period. The negative trend continues this year.

To increase transport services, it is necessary to look for alternative ways, rather than increasing the fare in public transport, emphasized the chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee Alexander Kosinets. At the same time, he noted that it is necessary to develop logistics, conduct an inventory of production facilities of vehicle fleets, rolling stock in order to optimize their number, eliminate shortcomings in transport services for the population, and develop export services.

At the meeting of the regional executive committee, the task was set to complete the work on creating the company "Vitebskavia" as soon as possible and to develop a comprehensive program for the development of the transport system of the Vitebsk region.
