Vitebsk Medical College named after Academician Ignat Antonov

Since October 1, the Vitebsk State Medical College has been named after Ignaty Petrovich Antonov, an honorary citizen of Minsk and Vitebsk, a neurologist, an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, a People's Doctor of Belarus, and a participant in the Great Patriotic War. In 1940, he graduated with honors from the Vitebsk Feldsher-Accoucheur School, as the college was previously called.

The corresponding order of the main department for healthcare of the regional executive committee was announced in a solemn setting – at a meeting of the educational institution's council and a gathering of the teaching staff, attended by Ignaty Petrovich's daughter, sister, and niece.

For the future memorial corner of the professor, the relatives donated his portrait, photographs from personal archives, rare monographs, and even a neurological hammer with which the doctor treated patients.

– In recent years, we have paid great attention to preserving the rich history of our educational institution, – said College Director Valentina Zayats. – In 2021, it will be 150 years old! Before the opening of the Vitebsk Medical University in 1934, it trained most of the medical personnel in the region. Therefore, naming the college after a graduate, a renowned academician, is a great honor.

By the way, Valentina Ivanovna personally knew the academician. In 1998, she was the vice-rector of the Vitebsk Medical University, and Ignaty Petrovich gave her one of his works with a commemorative inscription and best wishes.
