"Vyalikaya vyasel'nitsa" gathered almost 300 guests in Rossony

The unique regional festival-competition "Vyalikaya Vyasel'nitsa" is held in the Vitebsk region every two years. This year, its participants included representatives from 19 districts of the Vitebsk region, as well as folklore groups from Latvia and Russia.

"Vyalikaya Vyasel'nitsa" was first held ten years ago in Dubrovno. A few years later, the wedding festival gained regional status and began to move between different cities. The program of the review-competition is different every year. In 2017, in Ushachi, it was a wedding reconstruction: a guy from Glubokoye was "married" to a girl from Ushachi. In Rossony, researchers of Belarusian folk traditions and customs competed in three contest nominations.

It began with presentations of ritual wedding table dishes – 16 districts of the Vitebsk region took part in the competition. There was everything here! A butter ram from Glubokoye, a horned loaf from Dubrovno, berry kulaga from Bigosovo, a loaf on maple leaves. Residents of Verkhnedvinsk treated guests with meat baked in rye bread. Postavy chefs brought a dough ram, beautiful as a statuette. Representatives of Rossony set up a fish table – from ordinary fried pollock to smoked carp and stuffed pike. Almost every table hadvinaigrette, aspic, pickled mushrooms, pancakes, sauerkraut. And, surprisingly, fried eggs: in many regions, this dish was prepared specifically for newlyweds, and the bride and groom had to eat it from the same plate.

Then they started singing, because what is a wedding without a song? Folklore ensembles showcased the brightest traditions of their regions. And "Vyalikaya vyasel'nitsa" concluded with an improvisation contest "They married me off without me." Representatives from Polotsk, Liozno, Sharkovshchina, Dubrovno, Senno, and Shumilino competed for the title of the best matchmaker.

The organizers of "Vyalikaya vyasel'nitsa" were the Vitebsk Regional Methodological Center

Center of Folk Art and Rosson District Executive Committee.
