Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Council of Deputies Vladimir Terentyev congratulated the students and teachers of Gorodok District on Knowledge Day.

The head of the Vitebsk region's deputy corps, along with the district leadership, was an honored guest at the ceremonies dedicated to September 1st at Secondary School No. 1 and Secondary School No. 2 in the district center, and at the school in the agro-town of Bychiha.

— This year, about 180 children in Gorodok District are starting school for the first time. This indicates that your small homeland has a future and potential for development. It is gratifying that your children are increasingly making their mark in regional and national subject Olympiads, — said Vladimir Terentyev. — We, for our part, strive to pay attention to all educational institutions, regardless of their location, so that every child can receive a good education in comfortable conditions.

Vladimir Vladimirovich noted that the new academic year will be particularly challenging for future graduates — they will have to study hard and, together with their parents, decide where to apply. As for those who have just entered school, he advised them to listen carefully to their mentors and make new acquaintances.

— Our schools employ cohesive teams of teachers who treat all children as their own, strive to give them maximum knowledge to prepare them for independent life. They also instill a love for their small homeland and its history, — said the chairman of the district executive committee, Petr Korobach.

Officials presented educational institutions with certificates for the purchase of equipment and sports inventory, and first-graders received books and sweets. On behalf of the teaching staff and parents, the principals thanked the regional and district leadership for paying attention to the education system of Gorodokshchina not only on holidays but also on a regular basis, helping to strengthen the material and technical base and acquire modern equipment that allows students to deepen their knowledge. For example, a major overhaul of Secondary School No. 2 in Gorodok was recently completed. The canteen, heating and ventilation systems, electricity and water supply, and sewage systems have been transformed. Lighting fixtures have been replaced. The sports and assembly halls, classrooms, especially labor training rooms, have been modernized. Metal and wood processing machines were purchased for boys, and a sewing and home economics workshop was equipped for girls. A new language lab has appeared, and the library has been transformed into an information and resource center where one can read a book and search for necessary information on the global network.

— Approximately 2.5 million rubles were spent on the major overhaul. In addition, necessary work was carried out in other schools during the summer, — noted Vladimir Terentyev. — Educational institutions are gradually being named after great countrymen or people who played a significant role in the history of the district. For instance, Secondary School No. 1 is named in honor of Marshal Ivan Bagramyan, twice Hero of the Soviet Union, who commanded the troops of the 1st Baltic Front that liberated Gorodokshchina from the Nazi invaders in late 1943. Secondary School No. 2 will bear the name of Alexander Sobolevsky, a local native and medic, who was the first in the USSR to receive the Hero of the Soviet Union star in peacetime.

In Bychiha, the delegation congratulating students and teachers was joined by a graduate of the local school, former head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Belarus, and now chairman of the Belarusian Volleyball Federation, Vladimir Vashchenko. He wished the children to study excellently and not to be afraid to set ambitious goals for themselves, because in Belarus, rural education is no worse than in cities. He presented his native educational institution with professional equipment for volleyball classes, and first-graders with school supplies.
