For the first time in the Vitebsk region, a comprehensive program for the prevention of STIs among youth has been adopted

February 15, Vitebsk / Sergey Kochetov - BELTA /. A comprehensive program of measures to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among youth for 2011-2012 has been adopted for the first time in the Vitebsk region. This was announced today at a press conference by Viktor Spiridonov, chief physician of the Vitebsk Regional Clinical Dermatovenerologic Dispensary, according to a BELTA correspondent. The document was developed by medical professionals in conjunction with the departments of education, culture, and internal affairs, as well as the department for youth affairs of the regional executive committee, and is aimed at consolidating efforts and coordinating preventive work of all departments among youth. "The main focus of our work in the coming years will be the prevention of STIs in adolescents, which will be carried out under the motto 'Youth Reproductive Health - the Golden Fund of the Nation!'", emphasized Viktor Spiridonov. In 2010, 4 cases of syphilis, 15 cases of gonorrhea, 7 cases of chlamydia, and 34 cases of trichomoniasis were registered in the region in the age group under 18. In the 18-19 age group, these figures increase by 2-3 times, added Viktor Spiridonov. Active interdepartmental cooperation in STI prevention among youth will help stabilize the epidemiological situation and reduce the risk of adverse consequences of urogenital infections. For example, the region plans to develop a network of STI diagnostic laboratories, introduce innovative treatment technologies, and conduct lectures for both educational institution teachers and students. According to Viktor Spiridonov, the principles of prevention in working with youth have changed recently. For over five years, Vitebsk specialists have been using medical services such as online consultations on the website of the Vitebsk Regional Dermatovenerologic Dispensary. A helpline and "young family schools" have been organized at the registry offices. The primary prevention office, established in 2001, works in close cooperation with the education department and youth organizations. Dispensary specialists constantly participate in events promoting a healthy lifestyle and give lectures on STI prevention issues. -0-
