The second round of the competition to create a monument to Princess Olga starts in Vitebsk
February 2, Vitebsk / Olga Bogacheva - BELTA /. The second round of the competition for the creation of a monument to the founder of the city, Princess Olga, is starting in Vitebsk, Petr Podgursky, chief specialist of the culture department of the Vitebsk City Executive Committee, told a BELTA correspondent.
13 works by sculptors and architects from Vitebsk, Polotsk and Minsk have been submitted for the second round of the competition. Their main difference from the works presented at the first stage of the competition is the greater use of pagan symbols by the authors, the presence of secondary elements directly related to the construction of the city, and the depiction of Olga with a more earthly appearance. Previously, the emphasis in the works was on highlighting the sanctity of the princess (a halo, doves, a cross). However, the sketches presented at that time did not arouse particular interest, and therefore did not find support among the townspeople and the professional jury. This time, public discussion will begin on February 3. You can familiarize yourself with the exposition of the submitted works at an exhibition in the Music Lounge. The jury members, taking into account the opinion of the residents of the regional center, will announce their verdict after February 13.
In addition to the monument to Princess Olga, in the near future, a monument to Alexander Nevsky, whose fate is also connected with Vitebsk, should appear in the city on the Daugava. Sculptors are currently working on the implementation of this idea, noted Nikolai Podgursky. -0-
