An exhibition of Great Patriotic War veteran A. Kovalev opened in Vitebsk
May 6, Vitebsk / Olga Bogacheva - BELTA /. An exhibition of Great Patriotic War veteran Anatoly Kovalev opened today in Vitebsk, a BELTA correspondent reports.
The exposition, titled "Soldier's Roads," presented at the Center for Modern Art, is conceptually divided into two spaces: the roads of war and the peaceful roads of the artist. A map is displayed on the hall wall, marking the main points of these roads. The Great Patriotic War is one of the central themes in the veteran's work. It is revealed through sculptures and paintings, and drawings made in the first post-war years. The theme of peaceful life is represented by lyrical and philosophical paintings: landscapes, still lifes, and portraits.
The exposition is designed to provide an insight into the different facets of Anatoly Kovalev's work. At the same time, an installation with the artist's easel creates a sense of involvement in the veteran's work and life. The exhibition can be visited until May 15.
Anatoly Kovalev was born on May 10, 1926, in the village of Dolgopolye, Gorodok district. At the age of 17, having crossed the front line, the future artist became a participant in combat operations as part of the 61st Guards Rifle Regiment. He traveled the roads of war from the Dvina to the Elbe, triumphantly marched through Berlin, and was awarded the Orders of the Red Banner, the Patriotic War I degree, and the medals "For the Victory over Germany" and "For the Capture of Berlin." Since April 1963 to the present, he has been teaching at the Faculty of Art and Graphics of Vitebsk State University named after P.M. Masherov. -0-
