Farms in the Glubokoye district completed ice harvesting with the first rays of the spring sun

March 15, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA/. With the first rays of the spring sun, ice harvesting was completed in the Glubokoye district of the Vitebsk region. Farms have decided to use the old-fashioned method of cooling milk this summer, the Glubokoye District Executive Committee's agriculture and food department told a BELTA correspondent. In summer, Glubokoye cows graze in meadows around the clock. Milking is done using mobile units and lasts about 2.5 hours. During this time, in the heat, milk sours, its taste qualities are lost, and farms incur losses. Not all agricultural enterprises can afford to purchase mobile refrigeration units, but stocking up on ice in advance for cooling is feasible and affordable. Glubokoye livestock breeders adopted the harvesting technology from one of the farms in the Gomel region. Ice blocks are cut from water bodies, and polyethylene bags are also filled with water, tied, and left in the frost: after a few hours, an environmentally friendly milk cooler is ready. More than 100 tons of ice have been harvested in this way. The reserves will also be stored using the Gomel method: in clamps, under a layer of sawdust, brushwood, straw, and polyethylene. According to preliminary calculations, the old-fashioned method will allow the district as a whole to save approximately 40,000 kWh of electricity per month. 98% of the farms in the Glubokoye district are participating in the experiment. After the grazing period ends, the district agricultural department intends to make a final decision on the feasibility of using ancient methods in modern agriculture. -0-
