Farms in the Vitebsk region have harvested potatoes on almost a quarter of the planned area
September 15, Vitebsk / Sergey Kochetov - BELTA /. Farms in the Vitebsk region have harvested potatoes from an area of over 1.2 thousand hectares, which is almost a quarter of the harvesting area, the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee's Agriculture and Food Department informed a BELTA correspondent.
As of September 15, the gross potato harvest amounted to over 19.7 thousand tons with an average yield of 182 centners per hectare. All districts in the region have started mass harvesting of the traditional crop, and harvesting schedules have been communicated to each farm and are being adhered to. The highest yield is in the Tolochin district, where 259 centners are harvested per hectare.
It is necessary to put 8.8 thousand tons of potatoes into the stabilization fund for winter storage, so the harvested crop will be sufficient to fully meet the demand for this crop in the region. Starting September 19, fairs for the sale of agricultural products will be organized in all districts, where anyone can stock up for the winter on an individual basis.
Citizens are actively helping with potato harvesting. Today, over 4,000 students from universities, secondary vocational schools, and vocational-technical institutions are working in the fields of the region. City employment services have also joined the harvesting efforts, organizing paid public works for the unemployed on farms in the region. -0-
