Applications for the creation of a monument to Alexander Nevsky in Vitebsk have been closed
December 2, Vitebsk / Olga Bogacheva - BELTA /. The application submission for the creation of a monument to Alexander Nevsky in Vitebsk has been completed, Petr Podgursky, chief specialist of the Vitebsk City Executive Committee's Culture Department, told a BELTA correspondent.
A total of 10 applications from sculptors and architects from Vitebsk, Polotsk, and Minsk were submitted for the competition. The sketches feature both equestrian sculptures of the prince and his full-length figure. The monument will be located on Millennium Square.
Public discussion of the submitted projects will begin in Vitebsk next week. The competition results are planned to be summarized at the end of December. The winner will receive the right to implement their project, as well as a cash prize of Br3.5 million.
Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky, Prince of Novgorod and Grand Prince of Kiev and Vladimir, gained universal fame with his victory over the Swedes on the banks of the Neva River in 1240, and over the German knights of the Livonian Order (Battle of the Ice in 1242). The name of the talented commander and far-sighted politician is connected with Belarusian history through his marriage to Princess Paraskevia (Alexandra) of Polotsk. According to some sources, the wedding of the young couple took place in Vitebsk in the Annunciation Church. His son Vasily also ruled here for some time.
Petr Podgursky also noted that the second round of the competition for the creation of a monument to Princess Olga, Equal-to-the-Apostles, is currently underway. The first round of the competition proved to be inconclusive, as neither the jury nor the citizens could choose a worthy project. -0-
