Residents of the Vitebsk region are experiencing one of the coldest Januarys in 74 years

January 27, Vitebsk / Olga Bogacheva - BELTA /. Residents of the Vitebsk region are experiencing one of the coldest Januarys in the last 74 years. This was reported to a BELTA correspondent by the Vitebsk Regional Center for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring. The coldest January with an average monthly temperature of minus 16-17 degrees in the northernmost region of the country was observed in 1987. This month is expected to be only 3 degrees warmer than this record. Over 74 years of meteorological observations, such a cold January has been recorded in the Vitebsk region only 10 times, meteorologists emphasized. At the same time, the frost that set in with the arrival of the Siberian anticyclone did not bring new climatic records for the Dvina region. Last night, the temperature in the regional center was minus 28 degrees. However, on January 27, 1969, it was even lower - minus 31 degrees. It was coldest in the northwestern regions of the region. For example, in the urban-type settlement of Yezherishche, the coldest point in the region, the thermometer dropped to 33 degrees below zero. However, for this settlement, the absolute long-term record of minus 41 degrees, set in 1940, was also not reached. In the coming days, the frosts in the Vitebsk region will weaken to moderate, but will persist until the end of the month, the regional meteorological center added. -0-
