Druya has a rich history. The current agro-town is located on the bank of the Western Dvina River, on the very border with Latvia, and on the opposite bank is the Latvian settlement with a similar name, Piedruja. The settlement was first mentioned in the "Chronicle of Poland, Lithuania, Samogitia and All Rus'", when it was occupied by Prince Andrei Olgerdovich around 1386. Although there is a possibility that it was Druya that was mentioned in historical documents in connection with the first use of firearms in Rus'.
